The best way to learn calculating percentages is by looking at a few real life examples.

Example1: The state of Georgia in the United States has a population of 10 million. If the population above 40 years of age is 2 million, what is the percentage of population above 40 years of age?

Solution:

Total Population = 10 million

Population above 40 years = 2 million

Fraction of population above 2 million = 2million/ 10 million = 1/5

Percentage of population above 2 million = fraction of population above 2 million . 100

= 1/5. 100 = 20%

This example suggests that the fraction of something or the percentage of something is very closely related. Let us try one more problem of a slightly complicated nature.
