Transgenics

The organisms which contain functional genes which have been experimentally introduced by genetic engineering from another species are called transgenic organism or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Present and future applications of transgenics.

a. To produce transgenic plants with agronomically important traits such as disease resistance, pest resistance and tolerance to herbicides and pesticides.

b. Transgenic tomatoes have longer shelf life due to delayed ripening.

c. Production of antibodies and vaccines in transgenic plants like banana and tomato. Children may get immunized against several deadly diseases like cholera by eating such transgenics.

d. The gene for human growth hormone has been successfully introduced into mice. Transgenic mice are larger.

e. To grow “spare parts” for humans (Xeno-transplantation) in pigs.

f. To produce pharmaceutically important drugs and proteins in huge quantities in the milk of cows and goats.
