Developoment and Differentiation

Differentiation

Differentiation is the process by which the unspecialised embryonic cells change in structure and function during development and growth of an organism to form specialised cell types, tissues, and organs, distinct from one another. Differentiation makes cells of the same genotype to assume different phenotypes.

A cell cannot have specialisation for just a single life function and lose the ability to perform all others. It must carry on metabolism and maintain steady state all the time for its survival. Specialization affects only the additional functions, and the fewer of these additional functions a cell performs, the more specialized it is.
