Human Genetics

Methods of Study
The branch of genetics, which deals with the inheritance of characters in human beings, is called human genetics. Eugenics is a branch of human genetics which is concerned with the use of knowledge of genetics for the welfare of the human race.
Human Hereditary Traits
Inheritance in man conforms to the same genetic principles, which govern inheritance in other animals and in plants. About 200 traits are transmitted from generation to generation in humans. These are called hereditary traits. These include dominant as well as recessive traits. Many human traits are transmitted in a simple Mendelian manner, while many others follow a non-Mendelian pattern shown when there is co-dominance, polygenes and sex-linked genes.
Genetic Diseases
A large number of diseases are known to be inherited from the parents to the offspring. Such diseases are known as genetic diseases. Most of these diseases are caused by the expression of recessive genes.
Summary
The branch of genetics concerned with the study of inheritance of human traits is called human genetics. An extension of knowledge of genetics applied to improve quality of human race is called eugenics.
