The kingdom Metaphyta (or the plant kingdom in its true sense) includes all the eukaryotic, multicellular, photosynthetic plants found in this biosphere. It consists of three major groups of plants algae, bryophytes and tracheophytes. The group algae includes primarily aquatic or semi aquatic multicellular forms which do not possess an embryo stage. Bryophytes are primarily terrestrial non-vascular plants, but require water for reproduction. Tracheophytes are land plants with vascular tissues. Both bryophytes and tracheophytes possess an embryo stage and hence, collectively described under Embroyphyta. Tracheophytes include the pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Following are the major groups of plants placed under the Kingdom Metaphyta:

ALGAE (No embryo stage during development)

1. RHODOPHYTA (Red Algae)

2. PHAEOPHYTA (Brown Algae)

3. CHLOROPHYTA (Green Algae)

EMBRYOPHYTA (Embryo stage present)

1. BRYOPHYTA (NON VASCULAR)

2. TRACHEOPHYTA (VASCULAR)

a) PTERIDOPHYTES

b) GYMNOSPERMS

c) ANGIOSPERMS
