Nature's Role In Extinction
Organic evolution not only creates new species but also eliminates some old ones. Many species became extinct before man appeared.

Examples: trilobites, dinosaurs.

Causes of Extinction

Many factors contribute to the extinction of wild life.

1) Hunting

Hunting for food (subsistence hunting) trade (commercial hunting) and fun (sport hunting) has resulted in the decrease of species.

Examples: Dodo, cheetah, musk deer and blue whale

Excessive hunting has recently resulted in extinction of Dodo and cheetah

2) Forest fires

Forest fires due to human activity of many species of wild life in the past.

3) Destruction of habitats

This is the most serious threat to wildlife. Habitats have been destroyed due to developmental works, deforestation and pollution.

4) Introduction of new species

Intentional or chance introduction of exotic species into new islands or countries by man adversely affects the native species.

Example: Rabbits and goats introduced in Pacific and Indian ocean islands are destroying the habitats of many native plants, reptiles and birds.

5) Physical alteration of environment

Any physical change in the routes of the migratory animals adversely affects them. They may fail to find way and reach their destination, and perish. Some dams block the migration of fish to spawning grounds.

6) Lack of education

Our people are not aware of the importance of wild life, of the possible consequences of the destruction of wild life and of the methods to protect wild life.

7) Official laxity

Laxity on the part of the officials in the enforcement of wild life protection acts is a major reason for the decreasing wild life of our country.
