Detection of Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are those infections and communicable diseases, which are transmitted from an infected person to a healthy but susceptible person during unprotected sexual contact. These usually affect the reproductive system but may spread to other body parts as well. STDs are caused by Bacteria, Protozoa and viruses.

Detection
1) Clinical symptoms provide the initial indication of the kind of STD.

2) Laboratory investigations including culture microscopic observation gives some confirmation.

3) Detection of specific antigens / antibodies by ELISA or other tests.

4) In culture the organism can be isolated, grown and identified.

5) DNA hybridisation is a method to identify the pathogen based on the genome of the concerned pathogen.

6) PCR (Polymerise chain reaction) is a method, which is also employed in the definite detection and identification of the pathogen.
