Introduction
|
It is aptly said that pollution is the price paid by us towards social development through scientific advancement. Pollution is a peril of our society. It is a peril out of scientific achievements applied to improvement of human facilities.

Science is a tool of development. This is a well known system of belief. Many debates have been discussed on this subject. Many achievements of science have proved it. Many problems due to science have deterred the human existence. Still, science has a chequered position of vehicle to social transformation, tool for development, method of improving the quality and standard of living.

But, science is also a primary reason for many human miseries. Science has caused many miseries of human society. For e.g., atomic bombs, hydrogen bomb, arsenic weapons, suicidal drugs, psychotropic drugs etc. They directly antagonise the scientific achievements.

But some miseries caused by scientific achievements are guised and wrapped in the human welfare programmes. They are not easily realised to be dangerous in the light of prosperity brought by welfare programmes. For e.g., - Atomic plant explosion and miseries caused by it are wrapped up in power generation programme by atomic plants. Miseries of urbanisation are disguised in facilities offered due to urban developments. There are number of such dangerous human welfare programmes - where dangers are realised after sufficient damage is caused.

Unfortunately, cycle of human social development is irreversible.

Whatever process we adopt and whatever phase we pass in the course of human development - they are irreversible. Be it urbanisation, be it industrialisation, or be it health awareness programme - nothing can be reversed even if at some stage they are seen to add problems to human welfare in reality.

One of such social maladies caused by all round development of human society is pollution. It is a part of most developmental programmes undertaken for development of human society based on scientific achievements. Science aims at creating better society. It creates better society but leaves some form of challenging questions defeating the basic objectives of human welfare. Pollution is one such well pervaded problem and challenging all aspects of human life packed up with many human welfare programmes.
