| Bio piracy refers to unauthorised and unlawful access to biological secret and use of such secrets for specific gain. |

| In biological research many secrets have been unravelled. Genetic structures of potentially useful organisms, genetic structures of dangerous mutants of some animals or plants, secrets of medical achievements, secrets of bio-chemical nature of potent drugs etc are few examples of such secrets of biological research. These secretes are either useful or highly dangerous and their usage is not yet a practice in the civilized society. Some of them may have far reaching consequences on population and scientist would not have interest to propagate it for general public. |

| When antisocial elements or unscrupulous people gain entry into such unaccessible secrets they would make use of such secrets to gain unlawfully by such inventions. This is referred to as Bio-piracy. |
