Growth, Regeneration and Ageing

Summary
Growth is an irreversible increase in size and weight of an organism. The cells of the body do not grow uniformly but differentially. The main types of growth are auxetic, multiplicative and accretionary. The human growth curve is sigmoid and is controlled by hormones.

Regeneration is of two types. Reparative regeneration and restorative regeneration. There are two mechanisms of regeneration in animals.

They are, Morphollaxis and Epimorphosis.

Ageing is the process of progressive deterioration in the structure and function of the cells, tissues, and organs of the organism as it grows older. During ageing several symptoms appear and these may be morphological and physiological at the organ level, cellular as well as extracellular.

Various theories have been propounded to account for the ageing of cells and individual as a whole but none of the theories fully satisfies the process of ageing in all animals.
