| Acquired Immuno - Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) |
 |
| It is a viral disease caused by the infection from a retrovirus, known as Human Immuno - deficiency Virus. |
| |
 |
| |
| Retroviruses have RNA genomes that replicate via DNA copies. HIV infects and kills T-helper cells. This weakens the acquired immune response and even abolishes it. The viral RNA is converted into DNA copy by the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase. The DNA copy of HIV gets inserted into the human chromosone and starts replicating. These may be transcribed to produce RNA copies of the virus which combine and form viral particles. The infected cell is lysed in this process and the viral particles released infect new T-helper cells and the process goes on. |

| AIDS is characterised by symptoms like Pneumonia, Skin cancer, brain damage, decreased platelet count, severe weight loss and general loss of health. There is no specific therapy against HIV infection. |
