Microbial Resource
|
Microbial resource is a resource not seen by naked eyes, like all other resource. But it is a powerful resource existing in all parts of globe - in atmosphere, on the earth, inside the earth, on the sea and inside sea, inside the bodies of animals and plants.

Although large number of microbial species falling in the groups of fungi, bacteria and viruses are pathogenic to create diseases to plants and animals, microbes are considered as resources. Because, the benefit arising out of microbes is much more than loss created by them.

These benefits include:

a) natural fixation of nitrogen as symbiotic and non-symbiotic bacteria.

b) saprophytic bacteria and fungi - which are responsible for

decomposition of plants and animals into simpler products. They are the basis of ecological balance.

c) Many of them are autotrophs and produce food by photosynthesis. They are the food of many primary consumers.

d) Large numbers of microorganisms are known to have beneficial characters like fermentation, curdling, which are commonly employed for the benefit of man.

e) Recently, large numbers of microorganisms are employed as agents to manufacture, on commercial scale, the vaccines, medicines, vitamins, acids, proteins, hormones, etc. This is a specialized field commonly termed as Biotechnology.
