Permeability
|
Permeable

Permeable membrane allows free movement of water and solutes in and out of the cell.

Example: Cell wall in plant cells

Impermeable

Impermeable membranes prevent diffusion of water and solutes into protoplasm of cell.

Example: Submerged walls of cork cells

Semipermeable

Semipermeable membranes are alive and selective in their action. These membranes allow solvent of one side to move freely but at the same time resist the movement of solutes. Due to their selective nature such membranes are called selectively permeable membranes or differentially permeable membranes.

Example: Plasma membrane or cell membrane
