Percentage of Adult Population
Percentage of adult population is an important indicator for growth of population. A part of adult population may be reproductively active - which forms the basis of projections of birth rate and growth rate. Total adult population and classified data on adult population - sex wise, education wise, habitation wise (rural and urban) can lead to many meaningful inferences in the fields of employment opportunities, women work force, urban habitations, etc.
 
Adult Literacy Percentage
It indicates what percentage of adult population is literate. This forms the basis of programmes such as adult education programmes, family welfare programmes, health awareness programmes., etc. General success of many national developmental programmes depends upon adult literacy %.
 
Immigration
Immigration refers to entry of population from other countries for permanent residence. They add to the population of nation. It excludes tourists and visitors.
 
Emigration
Emigration refers to section of people leaving the country to reside in other countries permanently. Emigration reduces the population.
 
Population Growth Rate
Population growth rate refers to net rate at which population is added annually to the population.
 
Population growth rate = (Br + Ir ) - (Dr + Er )
 
where Br - Birth rate
 
Ir - Immigration rate
 
Dr - Death rate
 
Er - Emigration rate
 
all expressed as % of population.

A country can attain positive growth in population or negative growth in population depending on its birth rate, death rate, immigration rate and emigration rate. Many countries have recorded zero growth also, where population has remained same for several years.
