Forms of Reproduction - Asexual Reproduction
Definition
Production of offsprings by a single parent without the formation of gametes is called asexual reproduction. It is also called as somatogenic reproduction.
 
Characteristics
 
Only one parent is involved
 
All cell division are mitotic divisions
 
The offspring is genetically identical to the parent. It is a clone.
 
It is a very rapid mode of multiplication.
 
Does not involve the fusion of gametes.
 
Is found in protozoans, sponges, coelentrates, tunicates and certain worms. It is not found in higher invertebrates and vertebrates.
