Definition

Production of offsprings by a single parent without the formation of gametes is called asexual reproduction. It is also called as somatogenic reproduction.

Characteristics

  • Only one parent is involved
  • All cell division are mitotic divisions
  • The offspring is genetically identical to the parent. It is a clone.
  • It is a very rapid mode of multiplication.
  • Does not involve the fusion of gametes.
  • Is found in protozoans, sponges, coelentrates, tunicates and certain worms. It is not found in higher invertebrates and vertebrates.
