Production of offsprings by a single parent without the formation of gametes is called asexual reproduction. It is also called as somatogenic reproduction.Characteristics
- Only one parent is involved
- All cell division are mitotic divisions
- The offspring is genetically identical to the parent. It is a clone.
- It is a very rapid mode of multiplication.
- Does not involve the fusion of gametes.
- Is found in protozoans, sponges, coelentrates, tunicates and certain worms. It is not found in higher invertebrates and vertebrates.
