Respiration in Animals

Stages of Respiration
As mentioned in the above section, for energy to be released from food, there has to be an exchange of gases - oxygen and carbon dioxide. Respiration takes place in the following two stages

External Respiration
The exchange of gases between the environment and the body is called external respiration or gaseous exchange. This includes the entry of oxygen and the exit of carbon dioxide from the cells.

Internal Respiration or Tissue Respiration

It includes the exchange of gases between the cells and the blood and the breakdown of food in the cells.

The bio-chemical processes involved in respiration which break down the substrate to release energy take place in the tissues within the cells of an organism. Thus, this biochemical process is called cellular respiration.
