Nature
Sulphur at room temperature is a yellow, hard, crystalline, brittle solid. It is almost odorless and tasteless.
Melting point
When heated rapidly sulphur melts at 112.8oC, and if heated slowly, it melts at 118.6oC.
Boiling point
Sulphur boils at 444.6oC and gives off light yellowish orange vapor.
Solubility
It is insoluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohol and ether, and readily soluble in carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride, xylene, acetone, etc.
Conductivity
Sulphur is a non-conductor of heat and electricity. However, a lump of sulphur when rubbed by dry hand, or with wool, becomes electrostatically charged.
Effect of heat
When heated, sulphur undergoes a series of changes as discussed in section 13.5 above.
