A base is a substance that combines with an acid to form salt and water.

An alkali is a base that has hydroxyl radical (OH-) and is soluble in water.

   Examples: NaOH and KOH.

Alkalis react with aqueous solutions of metal salts producing the precipitates of respective metal hydroxides.

Certain metals like zinc, lead and aluminium react with concentrated hydroxide to produce salt and hydrogen.
