| Tests for Hydrochloric Acid |
 |
| For checking the presence of the hydrochloric acid, the following tests could be conducted: |
| |
| 1) It turns blue litmus paper red. |
| |
| 2) When silver nitrate solution is added to hydrochloric acid, it gives white precipitate of silver chloride. |
| |
| 3) The addition of lead nitrate solution to hydrochloric acid, gives a white precipitate of lead chloride. |
| |
| 4) When concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to oxidizing agents like manganese dioxide, lead dioxide, red lead, potassium permanganate or potassium dichromate, it liberates chlorine, a greenish yellow, pungent smelling gas. |
