Tests for Hydrochloric Acid
For checking the presence of the hydrochloric acid, the following tests could be conducted:
 
1) It turns blue litmus paper red.
 
2) When silver nitrate solution is added to hydrochloric acid, it gives white precipitate of silver chloride.
 
3) The addition of lead nitrate solution to hydrochloric acid, gives a white precipitate of lead chloride.
 
4) When concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to oxidizing agents like manganese dioxide, lead dioxide, red lead, potassium permanganate or potassium dichromate, it liberates chlorine, a greenish yellow, pungent smelling gas.
