Following are the tests for ammonia:

1. Ammonia gas has a characteristic pungent, irritating odour.

2. It changes the colour of:

a) Moist red litmus paper blue.

b) Turmeric paper brown.

c) Methyl orange yellow.

d) Colourless phenolphthalein deep pink.

3. A glass rod, dipped in concentrated hydrochloric acid when introduced into ammonia gas, produces thick white fumes of ammonium chloride.

4. It gives a white precipitate when bubbled through a solution of lead nitrate.

5. It gives a light blue precipitate and then a deep blue solution when bubbled continuously through an aqueous solution of copper salt.

6. Ammonia gives a brown colour or precipitate when treated with Nessler's reagent.

Nesslers reagent is a solution of mercuric iodide (HgI2) in potassium iodide solution. The formula is KHgI3. The solution is made alkaline by adding potassium hydroxide solution.
