In the reactions shown by isocyanide, first an electro phile and then a nucleophile add at the carbon to form a species which usually undergoes further transformations.

i) Addition of water

Acid catalyzed addition of water gives alkyl formamide derivative.

formation of alkyl formamide

ii) Reduction with LiAlH4

With LiAlH4 as well as on catalytic hydrogenation, isocyanides are reduced to N-methylamines. The -NC group gets reduced to -NH (CH3) group.

isocyanides are reduced to N-methylamines

formation of N methyl alkanamine

iii) Oxidation

Isocyanides are oxidized to isocyanates on reaction with HgO or with Ozone as well as with a halogen and DMSO (dimethylsulphoxide).

Chlorine gives alkyl iminocarbonyl chloride.

formation of alkyl iminocarbonyl chloride

Mercuric oxide gives alkyl isocyanate

formation of methyl isocyanate

The famous Bhopal tragedy in December 1984, was caused by methyl isocyanate.

action of isocyanate with DMSO
