The Solitary Reaper

Introduction

     The poem is set in the mountainous regions of Scotland. The poet is taking a walk through these Highlands when he sees something which makes him stop. He sees a young Scottish girl working in the fields all by herself. The young reaper goes about her job of cutting and bundling the stalks of grain.

     The poet stops still, moved by this beautiful song. He urges passers by to go past very quietly. He is spell bound to see this solitary reaper going on with her work with a song for company.
