Question (33):   Write an article on the changes brought about by the Internet.

Answer:  Information is power

Consider this, you want some information on Chinese pottery at 8 O'Clock in the evening. You cannot reach the library as it is closed or far away or buy a book just for a small piece of information. The answer to your problem comes in the form of the Internet. A few clicks and the required information shows on the computer screen!

Computers with Internet facilities have completely revolutionised the world. Today information is power and you are empowered if you have access to the Internet. Its use is limited only by imagination. Information is categorized by subject, interest, profession and other things. One can access data in matter of minutes and compile it easily. Since it is in electronic form, you can access and select pictures, and cut and paste matter. Websites can be created to create interests. One can start a forum for socially relevant topics or offer expert advise. Video conferencing is possible and this is used in the medical field for making quick decisions.

Of course, there is the e-mail, the electronic mail, for instant response to your messages or questions. Whether it is to check out the prices of new or second hand goods or a tourist spot before visiting it, everything can be done sitting at your desk with your fingers at the keyboard. On-line financial transactions with banks, share-brokers, booking airline tickets etc. have made the Internet an indispensable part of modern, commercial life. Imagine the time and resources saved if everything can be done from your doorstep. Will it not ease traffic congestions, shorten queues and reduce environmental pollution; not to mention conservation of natural resources like petrol?

In this age of information explosion, change and pace is the order of the day. The Internet certainly helps us to keep pace with the change.

Answer:
A Healthier Generation
Amidst gloom and pessimism, about how modern lifestyle is taking its toll on the urban masses, studies have revealed a positive trend in health awareness.

A recent survey has revealed that the city dwellers in Bangalore are actually more health conscious than we credit them to be. Without getting into too much statistics we can confidently say that the number of walkers and joggers have more than doubled. Interestingly, the walkers are not only retired people with more time in their hands but brisk young people who are serious about their regular exercise. This is also seen in the astounding number of gyms and health clubs, which have sprung up in every locality. Both men and women frequent these places and do serious work-outs and follow a regimented diet. The intention is not only to look good but also keep healthy. Private companies have health clubs in the office premises and insist on annual health check ups for their employees. Most thirty plus people are conscious of their health and go for regular routine health check ups a trend, which was virtually non-existent in the early eighties.

Amongst the educated masses, the survey reveals that only 5% use non-refined oil as a result of their awareness that saturated fats have ill-effects on cholesterol levels and the heart. This awareness could be attributes to the increase in the number of health magazines and T.V. and radio programmes on health. All these trends have reflected in the lowering of the death rate from 15% to 10%.

Education has played a key role in spearheading this change. The media have also played their part. If education spreads to more quarters and the media continue their efforts, the present generation will doubtless be a healthier generation.

Question (35):   You have to submit an article to the science section of your school magazine. The topic you have chosen is Global Warming. Write an article on the harmful effects of global warming.

image

Answer:  The Green House Effect

Environmental pollution is resulting in global warming. The earth's atmosphere acts like a blanket trapping the radiations of the Sun and not allowing it to go back. Carbon dioxide and other green house gases keep the earth at a comfortable temperature. If there were no green house gases, the earth would be colder. An excess of green house gases causes global warming. The green house effect is caused by the destruction of forests and increase in the use of coal, oil and gas. As a result we are facing some of the warmest years in this century.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been in balance for years. The oceans absorb billions of tonnes of carbon and trees too absorb carbon and store it. But when we destroy woods, the carbon is returned to the atmosphere. The rate at which carbon is poured out is faster than the rate at which it is absorbed. The burning of coal, gas and oil adds about five billion tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere every year. Mining of coal, gas and oil returns trapped coal in rocks to the atmosphere. Humans and animals breathe out carbon dioxide and produce methane, another green house gas. Aerosols and refrigeration plants emit CFCs, both of which attack the ozone layer and are 10,000 times more active in destroying the ozone layer. As a result of global warming, the weather patterns have changed. It has caused ice-caps to melt and sea-levels to rise. It could cause famines in many parts of the world and make hurricanes more destructive.

In such a grim scenario, we should all do our bit to control this phenomenon. All refrigeration plants should be certified CFC free. Industrialisation should follow environmental guidelines and stipulations. Urbanization should not eat into the remaining green spaces of the world. Planting more trees should become project work at school levels. Spreading of awareness will go a long way in preserving this planet so that it is habitable for the coming generations.

Question (37):   Write a letter to the Municipal Chairman of your area telling him about the problems faced in your area.

Answer:  XYZ
Gandhinagar

Date: 1-2-2001

The Municipal Chairman
Gandhinagar
Kolhapur

Sir

Subject: Problems faced by the residents of Basavanagudi

I wish to bring to your notice the plight of the residents of Basavanagudi.

The problems faced by them are many and most of them are in urgent need of attention.

There are very few garbage bins in our area and the few present are overflowing with garbage. Moreover the garbage is not collected regularly. Our streets are a sight with garbage strewn all over and a disgrace to the IT capital of India.

The roads are filled with potholes quite comparable to the craters of the moon! Apart from damaging vehicles they could be a risk to life too. After a shower or two the drains in our area overflow with a terrible stench emanating from them. They need to be cleaned regularly.

The streets are very poorly lit and are an ideal place for the antisocial to operate. And not to forget the menace of street dogs, who attack innocent pedestrians!

It is high time something was done. Roads should be relaid and new, larger bins placed in every street. Street lights need to be repaired and new ones installed to literally pull out our area from darkness. The street dogs should be taken to the pound or inoculated with antirabies vaccine.

On behalf of the residents, I request you to take a look into our problems and do the needful.

Thanking you

Yours faithfully

Dear Sir

Subject: Killing of elephants in Corbett National Park

Once again the Mafia poachers are active. Five tuskers were felled in Corbett National Park recently. Poachers fired deadly chisel-shaped poisoned darts from a rifle into the tusker's underbelly. As the poisoned animal finally collapsed and died they hacked the tusks brutally. The ivory was then sent to Delhi. The poacher's dart is believed to be tipped with a deadly pesticide thiodine. The gang is named chisel gang for their unique method of hunting. With the lifting of the ban on ivory trade, the poachers are more active than ever. Ivory fetches more than Rs 50,000 per Kg in the international market and a tusker yields 15 to 20 Kg of ivory. This has resulted in elephant mortality touching soaring levels.

The forest staff are ill-equipped to catch the poachers. Though 186 posts are sanctioned for forest guards only 154 are actually posted. There are only twenty-three foresters and six deputy rangers. The rangers and foresters are low on equipment. There are very few rifles and handsets and only two night binoculars. Vigilance at night is impossible without vehicles. There are only seven tame elephants. If the Forest Department is not armed with the necessary equipment how can it combat the onslaught of poachers who are actually organised criminals?

The existence of these pachyderms is in our hands. We can do our bit by spreading awareness. Let us not use ivory products. There should be a strong drive to nab the poachers. These enemies of our nation and our environment should be duly punished we should all commit ourselves to drive out this menace from our society.

Thanking you

Recreational Facilities in Padual Pradesh

As per your request a survey was conducted in Banashankari and the recreational facilities available for school children was looked into.

Trends

It is seen that while the number of units of families has increased considerably in 10 years, the facilities provided are sadly inadequate. In 1990 for 523 units of families the number of parks were 4, jogging tracks 3 and playgrounds 2. in 2002 though the units of families has gone up to 746 the number of parks remain the same. Infact, due to lack of maintenance, the jogging tracks have reduced and even they are in bad condition. Children need to run and play. But for this large locality there are only 3 playgrounds.

Predictions

Banashankari is a fast expanding locality. Soon the number of families residing here will increase to 800 or 1000. There will be greater need for playgrounds.

Recommendations

Considering that almost 4 large vacant government plots are lying uncared for, arrangements can be made for atleast 2 more playgrounds and parks. Such open spaces add to the beauty of the place and improve the health of residents.
Question (40):   You have been asked to submit a report on the market place of the area you live in. You have conducted a survey. Write this report to the Mayor of your city.

Answer:  XYZ

The Mayor

Karnataka

You recently asked me to submit a report on the market place of Basavanagudi. The following are my findings and recommendations:

General findings

In general, the market is overcrowded and filthy with garbage strewn all over the place. The shops spill into the pavements making it difficult for pedestrians to move freely. Cars and other vehicles are parked on both sides of the road causing terrible traffic jams. There are gaping potholes on the pavements and roads.

Everywhere there are remnants of rotting vegetables and fruits giving out an unbearable stench. The place is infested with flies making it a potential hazard for the outbreak of an epidemic.

Recommendations

- The garbage should be cleared regularly twice a day.
- Shopkeepers should be fined for spilling onto roads and pavements.
- Potholes should be immediately filled up.
- There should be a separate car park area which would prevent congestion and jams.

If the above recommendations are implemented, the market place will attract buyers not only from Basavanagudi but from other places also.

Thanking you

Question (41):   There has been a proposal for passing the Women's Representation Bill in the Parliament. Give a morning assembly speech on Women Power and how Parliament representation will help in the emancipation of women.

Answer:  Good Morning Everybody,

We are aware that the twenty-first century woman enjoys a much better status than what she did a century ago. Women are getting educated and leaving the hearth and their homes to earn their living and carve a niche for themselves in society. Yet there are many sections of our women who are ruthlessly exploited and repressed. Their condition goes unnoticed and their protests unheeded.

Only a few privileged women enjoy education, status and financial independence. The girl-child is still considered a burden to be married off. Newspapers are replete with stories of dowry harassment and wife-abuse.

Working women in an unorganized sector are under pressure. They enjoy no maternity leave and are forced to go without jobs and payments. Job security is only a distant dream and they are hired and fired at will.

Even the educated and privileged women face discrimination. Some time back there was this top woman bureaucrat who was denied a promotion to the post of Foreign Secretary because she was a woman. After challenging the decision in court, she was granted the promotion. Despite their capabilities many top level posts are denied to women. Subtle discrimination exists at all levels and a stop to this must be put.

Girls must be assured financial independence through education and property inheritance. Stereotyped views on the sex-roles must change. Boys must be encouraged to do housework and respect girls.

All this will be made easier if there is representation in the Parliament so that women's issues are given priority and handled quickly. No country will be developed without its women's population becoming emancipated. The voices of the women need to be heard and only women's representation in the Parliament will ensure this.

Question (42):   Recently there has been a proposal to abolish exams till class X to ease the burden of school going children. Give a speech expressing your views favouring the debate topic 'Abolition of exams for X - a blessing'

Answer:  Honourable Chief Guest, Teachers and Dear friends,

I am privileged to be here before you to express my views on a long awaited move by the Board.

I would like to share my views on the proposal to abolish exams till class X.

It is definitely heartening to know that the government is thinking of revamping the education in our country. Our education system is stressful for the children. Come exam-time and children land up with tension headaches, abdominal pains and near nervous breakdowns.

Our education system is certainly stressful both for children as well as for parents. It is a sad sight to see a six-year old lugging a two-kilo bag to school everyday. The load gets heavier as the child moves up each class. The system just allows cramming without much scope for analytical thinking and application. The exams merely test short-term memory and curb creativity.

With abolition of exams children can be encouraged to do self-study and project. Round-the-year grading of students can be done to ensure that learning is taking place, regular school inspections can be held. Doing away with tests will make children more co-operative and project work will reveal their creativity. Their knowledge will increase and their all round development will be ensured. It is commendable that the government is planning to make learning a pleasurable experience for the building blocks of our nation. Such a move must be lauded and the sooner the proposal becomes a reality, the faster parents and children can both relax.
Let each young mind bloom in a healthy atmosphere. Let us see the end of needless stress and pain. Let's live and learn.

Question (43):   Recently there has been a proposal to abolish exams till class X to ease the burden of school going children. Give a speech expressing your views against the debate topic 'Abolition of exams for X - a blessing'.

Answer:  Respected Teachers and my Dear friends,

Only the heated iron bends to good shape. It's important to mould young minds in the right direction.

Good morning, I stand before you to speak against the topic - 'Abolition of exams for X - a blessing'.

I would like to share my views with the others on the proposal to abolish exams till class X.

A well-educated Indian is second to none in the world in terms of conceptual clarity, analytical ability and application skills. The Indian education system has stood the test of time and has produced brilliant and outstanding people at all levels and in all streams. This could be a reflection of the rigorous and exacting education system that ensures excellence.

School examinations are an integral part of this education system. It breeds competition setting new standards of excellence every time. Doing away with exams may kill this very basic instinct - competition. Even though exams may be stressful they are the most effective means to ensure that children learn. Overlearning and reinforcement certainly ensure that what has been learnt becomes part of the permanent memory. Moreover unless the child learns to face exams the first exam will be the board exams and the child will find it difficult to cope with it. Life is full of examinations and exams are a reality.

We need to do some introspection before we take any steps to change the existing system. Unless there is a viable better option it may do more harm than good to do away with the time-tested system.

Question (44):   Debate on science is 'a Boon to Mankind' (for the topic).

Answer:  Science is boon to mankind (in favour of the topic)

From the tooth brush we use in the morning, to the light we turn off before going to bed, science has pervaded every aspect of our lives.
It is a foregone conclusion that science is a boon to mankind. It makes our life easy and comfortable - from the chair we sit on to the bed we sleep on everything is a creation of science.
Science has made tremendous progress in recent times. Communication links have revolutionised the world. The mobile phones make a man accessible even if he is stranded in a vast desert.
Computers have led to an information explosion. The world has shrunk into a global village. In this jet age it is possible to have breakfast in India and dinner in London. Science has enabled paraplegics like the famous astrophysicist, Stephen Hawkins to communicate with the world. With the help of a voice synthesizer he is able to share his profound ideas and knowledge with the rest of the world.
Science can save many a life. I challenge my opponent to dispute this fact. The progress in the field of medicine is amazing. Life saving drugs such as steroids work miracles, Laser surgery has made operations easy and painless, plastic surgery can restore mutilated limbs and vaccinations can prevent dreadful diseases.
Agriculture is another gift of science. Mechanised farming, fertilisers and pesticides have enhanced food production. Nuclear energy considered dangerous by my opponents has been harnessed to produce electricity.
I submit that science has made man think rationally. It provides answers to his ever questioning mind. It removes blind beliefs and superstitions and in creating this scientific temperament in man it draws the world together making it a better place to live in.
It is certainly an indisputable fact that science is the greatest blessing to man. Judicious use of it can assure betterment of mankind.
Question (45):   Write an article on the problems of teenagers, based on the cartoon given below.

image

Answer:  Problems of Teenagers

Pressure of studies, parental pressure, peer pressure, name it and the modern teenager has it. The modern teenager is no less stressed out than a busy executive in the corporate world. They are constantly under pressure to excel and do well. Parents goad them to improve their grades, enroll into courses, excel in sports and other activities, in short be super kids. At the end of the day, they land up in counselling centres talking with psychiatrists, trying to grope through the maze of confusions. A yawning generation gap completes the scenario.

The modern teenager stands alienated and alone, unable to communicate with friends, parents or teachers. This often results in the youngsters taking recourse to drugs, drinks and smoking. What starts out as fun becomes a path towards doom and destruction. Communication barriers come up between parents and children and they live like strangers under the same roof.

This growing problem must be tackled by the adults. The adult must try to understand the world of the teenager and reach out to him/her. Attitudes of parents must change and they must ensure their children a normal, carefree childhood. Love should not be equated with the child's scores in school. Over emphasis on academics must go and the child's natural ability tapped. Parents must be a pillar of support to the child, bailing him out from trouble. Unless the adult does his bit to relate to the teenagers, the same emotion will not be reciprocated by them.

Children must be allowed to make mistakes and parents must give up their sense of control. Change is the order of the day and only acceptance of change will bridge the gap between the adult and the teenager. The youth must be taught to live ethically in this world that is ridden with violence and crime. If adults remember that they were teenagers too, the problems of teenagers would vanish.

Question (46):   Based on the graphs presented below write an article on environmental pollution.

image

DF - Deforestation      SM - Smoke     F - Factory     N - Noise

Answer:  It is common knowledge that the burning problem facing the world today is environmental pollution. Yet, apathy and indifference towards a clean land and healthy environment has become a part of us. We do not realise that unless pollution is contained, the very human existence will be in danger. Deforestation, emission of harmful smoke from chemical factories, vehicles spewing out clouds of poisonous gases, all contribute to air pollution. Factory effluents contaminate water and make the soil infertile. Noise pollution due to pressure horns is a real and potent danger.

Metropolitan cities have become death traps. Pollution related diseases like asthma and other respiratory diseases have invaded our lives. There is global warming and the ecological balance is disturbed. The effects are visible in the withering effect on trees, plants and other vegetation and the dwindling number of wildlife.

As represented in the chart there is an alarming increase in the number of factories in the last five years. As a consequence smoke and noise have also increased. While there is a decline in deforestation there has been no compensation for trees already felled. Rapid afforestation and tree planting must take place.

It is high time we took steps to reduce this pollution. The government should take stringent measures. Factories should be set up away from towns and cities and provision made to dispose all wastes. Vehicles should be certified pollution-free. All of us can contribute towards a healthier environment. We should avoid the use of plastics which are non-biodegradable and hence harmful to the environment. We can easily control noise pollution by becoming a little more sensitive towards others. Plantation of trees could be projects at school level. If each one plants one then this planet will be a greener, healthier planet and will continue to be habitable for a long time to come. Protecting the environment is a challenge. The choice is between life and death. We are to decide!!
Question (47):   The following graph shows the increase in the number of cases of violence in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Give a 'morning assembly speech' on how violence has increased in your city and how you can curtail it.

image

Answer:  Good morning everybody!

Murders, thefts, daylight robberies, police encounters - these headlines greet us everyday from newspapers. We have got so used to them that we hardly bat an eyelid while reading them. Only news of senseless massacres and carnage catch our attention as statistics, which are soon forgotten. Violence has become so much a part of our lives that we have accepted it without any question.

Statistics released by the department of police recently, have thrown some light on the trend of violence in our city. Incidents of violence have shown a marked increase in the year 1992, probably a backlash of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. This increase continued till 1995.
This increase in violence is due to several reasons. Poverty and unemployment are the major ones. The idle youth are the perfect pawns in the hands of unscrupulous politicians to spark off communal violence or a riot. Violence is often introduced at home. Children play with toy guns or video games, which are full of violence. They watch hours of mindless violence on T.V. Receiving beatings and verbal abuse also affect the mental make-up of a child. Failures and inability to cope with pressures push them into the throes of frustrations. To vent out these frustrations an act of violence becomes the perfect alternative.

It is high time we did something to curtail violence. The idle youth should be gainfully employed so that their energies are channelised in the right direction. The police need to be vigilant to sparks of violence and nip them in the bud when occasions arise. Going by the statistics we can say that the police are doing their jobs and hence there has been a drop since 1995 in the incidents of violence. However, the numbers have not dropped further, which calls for intense vigilance. We, as responsible citizens of our country can contribute to the internal peace and security of our country by weeding out communal and regional prejudices. Just because we enjoy democracy, we should not misuse it. Opposition can be shown through peaceful means. If we are loving and tolerant towards all we can ensure a climate of peace and understanding for our beloved city.

Thank you.

Question (48):   ORG conducted a survey of executives working in the four metropolitan cities of our country and came out with statistics represented by pie-chart given below. Using the data given below and based on ideas from the unit on 'Health and Medicine', write an article.

image

Answer:  Modern Living has made the people unhealthy and disease-prone.

Modern man is so busy running after illusory wealth and fame that he seldom pauses to look at himself. He feels immortal till the alarm rings, sometimes in the form of angina pain or as a simple symptom of giddiness. In the past, illness crept up only after retirement. But modern India is facing a strange trend. People in their thirties are attacked by diseases, which are related to their lifestyles. A recent survey done by ORG has revealed that in the four metros of our country, only 25% of the executives are healthy. The rest are victims of blood pressure, diabetes or heart attacks. Another common ailment among the busy executives is spondylitis or any back-related problems.

In the modern age, life expectancy has gone up and there has been lot of advancement in medicines. No doubt modern living has made life easy and comfortable. Yet it is this easy life, which bequeaths a host of diseases upon us. Hypertension, blood sugar, heart attacks are related to sedentary lifestyles.

Reduced activities at home and offices, using elevators instead of staircases and using modern gadgets to make our work easier have made us lethargic and disease-prone. Apart from this, the consumption of fast foods in place of balanced diets, guzzling down sodas and gobbling up pizzas, we pay little attention to the nutritional value of food. Quick-fix meals are the order of the day and home cooked nutrition is a weekend past time as our intake of processed food is more.

To top it all is the stress-factor. Competition, dreams of making it big and the never ending appetite for making money ensures that the urban middle aged man faces diseases, which were earlier associated only with old age. Unable to cope with the pressures of modern life, modern man is often depressed, seeking counsel and help to avoid nervous breakdowns.

As this problem grows, companies are doing their bit to combat this problem. Many of them have in-house gyms and health clubs. Annual health check-ups have become mandatory.

Its high time man slowed down his pace in life. He has to recognize the real enemy - his lifestyle, and do everything to make it conducive to a healthier existence.

Question (49):   Write an essay on the plight of slum children in India based on the clue given below.

Plight of slum children - child labour - child abuse

Answer:  India, a developing country, is faced with problems of illiteracy, over population and poverty, which are manifested in the problem of child abuse. It is a major concern for the country because today's children are tomorrow's future and looking at the growing rate of child labour, the future of India seems bleak.

The attitude of parents is a major cause for the malaise because they view their children as earning members of the family. The children, deprived of their basic rights and childhood, are made to work in unhygienic and often hazardous jobs like manufacture of crackers etc. for a meager wage. Very often children are subjected to sexual abuse, which leaves a lasting impact on their minds. The child may become antisocial and resort to vandalism. Sometimes the child may suffer from severe depression and multiple personality disorders.

Though many NGO's are participating actively in trying to remove the exploitation, multinationals and private firms can play a big role in sponsoring the education of these slum children.

'Little drops of water make a mighty ocean', so it is time each and every citizen joins in the crusade against this curse in our society. It would be a matter of shame if we are unable to alleviate the suffering of the building blocks of our nation.
