Hotels 2 five star 3 youth hostels 5 five star 4 youth hostels
Foreign tourists 95000 2 lakhs
Indian tourists 45000 1.5 lakhs
1999 2004

Director of Tourism
Karnataka
Minister of Tourism
Karnataka

7-3-2004

Dear Sir

Sub: Report on tourism in our state based on survey and recommendations.

Current trends

The general trend is that the number of tourists visiting Karnataka has increased. The number of Indian tourists has gone up from 45,000 in 1999 to 1.5 lakhs in 2004 and the number of foreign tourists has gone up from 95,000 to 2 lakhs in the period from 1999-2004.

This could be attributed to the IT boom in Bangalore. As the IT capital of India, it draws executives and professionals from all walks of life. As the most happening place in India, it has made Karnataka the most attractive state in India's Tourism Map.

Accommodation

There are five star hotels, two 4-star and three 3-star hotels in Bangalore. There are a few guest houses and youth hostels. K.S.T.D.C. provides reasonable accommodation even in the remote areas. The occupancy rate is over 80% in all the above types of accommodation. The foreign tourists prefer the luxury hotels whereas, the Indian tourists prefer the economy ones.

Predictions for 10 years in the future

The foreign tourists are likely to cross 3 lakhs and the Indian tourists to cross 2 lakhs.

Recommendation

The accommodation available will be inadequate. There will be need to build at least twenty more luxury hotels and fifty more economy range hotels.

The roads and the transport system need to be improved. Better buses and package tours should be introduced. There is a need for an International Airport and Air services within the state.

There should be sufficient publicity of our state through media such as T.V. and the Internet.

Attractive package tours and month long regional festivals, highlighting the splendours of the region should be held to attract tourists.

The remote areas should have all facilities so that tourists find it convenient to stay.

If the above recommendations are considered seriously, the future of tourism in Bangalore is certainly very bright. Tourism is the greatest earner of foreign exchange in our state and there is no doubt that if tourism goes up, our economy will receive a boost.

Yours sincerely

XYZ
Director of Tourisim
