Comparisons

We compare people, objects, and actions according to their qualities.

We use adjectives (describing words) to describe people. Adjectives occur in these forms - positive, comparative and superlative.

Example:

Positive - Mohan is happy.

Comparative - Shyam is happier than Mohan.

Superlative - Sandeep is the happiest.

Comparing two Things

Look at the following sentences and see how the words of comparison are used:

1. Rita's dance performance was better than Mita's.

2. The cheetah can run faster than the lion.

3. The Kinetic is more expensive than the Bajaj spirit.

4. Mr. Rao is wealthier than Mr Shetty.

5. Gopa is fatter than Raj.

6. Mrs. Singh's teaching is as good as Mrs. Mukherjee's.

7. Chocolates are tastier than Mysore pak.

8. Life in a city is worse than in a village.

9. Mohan is the same age as Rahul.

10. Deepak is cleverer than Rohit.

Note
1 Adjectives and adverb of one syllable take the form of -er(sentences 2, and 10 faster,cleverer)
2 Adjectives of two or more syllables take the form of more-----than(sentence 3, more expensive than)
3 Adjectives of two syllables ending in -y take -ier form(sentences 4 and 7 wealthier,tastier)
4 Adjectives with irregular comparative form(sentences 8 and 1)(worse than,better than)
5 Adjectives with the form as------ as expresses equality(sentences 6 and 9 as good as the same age as)
6 Adjective of one syllable ending with single consonant preceded by a short vowel,this consonant is doubled before adding -er(sentence 5 fat-fatter)
