Non Finites

Verbs can be classified into two groups:

Column A Column B
Reading
Seeing
To read
To study
Feeling
Looking
To support/help
Went
Told
Offered
answered

The verbs in Column A are called non-finites.

The verbs in column A do not indicate tense.

The verbs in column B indicate tense.

You will learn about three types of non - finites:

  • the -ing form,
  • the infinitive (plain) form
  • the -ed form



Note
In formal writing,use of non-finites helps us to achieve precision and compactness in writing.


Verb + ing as a non-finite

Complete the sentences using -ing form of the verbs from the box:

3) He is tired of ________ for buses and wants to buy a car.

4) I avoid ________ too much oil in my cooking.

Suggested answer:

1) The doctor went around greeting all his patients.

2) He is applying for the post of a General Manager.

3) He is tired of waiting for buses and wants to buy a car.

4) I avoid using too much oil in my cooking.

5) Shyam has postponed selling off his apartment, as the property prices are low.

Infinites as Non-finites

1. Why did Raju go to Bangalore?

2. Why did Sheela sell her apartment?

3. Why is Meera going to Hassan?

4. Why did you come walking?

5. Why is Ram waiting in the library?

6. Why did you start late from office?

Suggested answer:

1. Raju went to Bangalore to study law.

2. Sheela sold her apartment to buy a bungalow.

3. Meera is going to Hassan to visit her mother.

4. I came walking to save money.

5. Ram is waiting in the library to meet Hari.

6. I started late from office to avoid the traffic.

Complete the following sentences using the verbs given in the box. Do not use any verb more than once.

Verb + ing and Infinities

Complete the following sentences:

1. Our Maths teacher did not to allow us ______________.

Suggested answer:

1. To------ play / sing / dance etc.

2. Play / dance / do anything

Verb + ed (Past Participle)

Combine the sentences using the correct verb form:

1. Nikhil was irritated by the music. Nikhil left the place.

2. Ranjan has completed his service. He will now lead a retired life.

3. Melanie was surprised at the turn of events. She decided to take positive action.

4. Gita is poor. She cannot buy a two-wheeler.

5. Raj was startled by Rohit's retort. He stopped talking.

6. She has given her property to her son. She now lives in an ashram.

Suggested answer:

1. Irritated by the music, Nikhil left the place.

2. Having completed his service, Ranjan will now lead a retired life.

3. Surprised at the turn of events Melanie decided to take positive action.

4. Being poor Gita cannot buy a two-wheeler.

5. Startled by Rohit's retort Raj stopped talking.

6. Having given her property to her son she now lives in an ashram.

Complete these sentences in any appropriate way using either the to-infinitive or the ing form of the verb in brackets. Some sentences both forms are possible.

  1. Ram could meet the Manager today, but he hasn't got any appointment it would mean (waiting / to wait)

  11. The B.M.C objected to the firm (to build / building) a four storeyed office near the airport.

  12. When you came into the house did you notice the children (to play / playing) in the park.

  13. I enjoy (sweeping / to sweep) in the house. It's relaxing.

  14. When the man realized he couldn't overpower the thief he started (to shout / shouting)
