A preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to something else as in the following sentences.
There is a cow in the garden.
I am fond of reading.
The mouse is under the chair.
Look at the following two sentences:
1. The cat is on the mat. - The preposition on indicates position.
2. The cat is moving across the roof. - The preposition across indicates direction.
Some prepositions show direction like across, past, round, towards, etc.
The man walked purposefully towards the bank counter.
Some prepositions show a period of time like during, throughout, etc.
I have been working throughout the summer vacations.
Some prepositions show position and space like among, above, opposite, beneath, in between, ahead of, in front of, on top of, etc.
A conflict broke out between the two communities.
There was a fight amongst the students.
