The four quadrants formed by the ordinate axes are numbered as shown in the figure.
 
The table below shows the sign of the coordinates of the point in different quadrants.
 
 
The following table shows the position of some points in the quadrants.
 
 
Example:
 
Name the quadrants in which the following points lie
 
A (-6,1), B (8, -4), C (4,6), D (-7, -7), E (0,5), F (9,0), G (-6,0),
 
H (0, -8).
 
Suggested answer:
 
Point A lies in II quadrant.
 
Point B lies in IV quadrant.
 
Point C lies in I quadrant.
 
Point D lies in III quadrant.
 
Point E lies on y-axis above the origin.
 
Point F lies on x-axis to the right of origin.
 
Point G lies on x-axis to the left of the origin.
