Definition of ratio
 
If a and b are two quantities with the same units such that ; then
 
Ratio does not have any unit.
 
The quantities a and b are called terms of the ratio.
 
a' is called antecedent (first term)
 
b' is called consequent (second term)
 
Note:
 
A ratio is always expressed in its lowest terms.
 
Examples:
 
a) Ratio of 20 boys to 15 girls.
 
 
Ratio of boys to girls =4:3
 
b) Ratio of Rs.50 to Rs.75
 
 
c) Ratio of 4m to 160cm
 
 
Note:
 
The value of a ratio remains the same if both the antecedent and the consequent are multiplied or divided by the same non-zero quantity.
