Absolute Error and Percentage Relative Error
From the above examples on approximation, we observe that the approximated value may be more or less than the original number.
 
The difference between these two values is called the absolute error.
 
Absolute Error = Original number - Approximated number
 
The ratio of the absolute error and the original number expressed in percentage form is called percentage relative error.
 
 
The number of students in a school are 640. Find (i) the absolute error. (ii) percentage relative error when the number is approximated to the nearest hundred.
 
 
(i) Number of students = 640
 
Number of students correct to nearest hundred = 600
 
Absolute Error = [640 - 600] = 40
 
(ii) %Relative Error
 
= 6.25 %
 
Ans: (i) 40 (ii) 6.25%
