Expansion of Matter
|
Matter expands on heating, i.e., solids, liquids and gases expand on heating. Let us consider expansion of solids:

Three types of expansions are considered in case of solids. This classification is done according to the shape of the solids.

When length of a solid (rod) is much greater than its breadth and thickness, linear expansion or expansion in length is considered.

Length of a rod

|

Length of a rod increases on heating

| When a solid is in the form of a Lamina,
its length and breadth increase on heating. Hence, its area also increases.
This is known as superficial expansion. |

|

Area of Laminar body increases on heating

The volume of a solid increases on heating. This is known as cubical expansion.

Let us now consider the three types of expansion in detail.
