  • The sun is a star of intermediate size and luminosity.

  • The sun appears to be larger and brighter than other stars because it is nearer to the earth than any other star.

  • There are nine planets, which revolve round the sun in closed elliptical paths.

  • Asteroids are very small planets of rock and metal, which revolve round the sun mainly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

  • Meteors are the heavenly bodies from the sky, which we see as bright streaks of light that flash for a moment across the sky.

  • The earth is a huge sphere, the surface of which is made up of rock, soil and water and is surrounded by air.

  • The earth consists of three major layers, which are the crust, mantle and core.

  • The outermost layer of earth is called crust.

  • The central region between the crust and core of the earth is called mantle.

  • The innermost part of earth is called its core.
