Expression for Displacement in SHM
 
 
The figure shows a body moving in a vertical circle with a uniform velocity vc and an angular velocity w. Let Qo represent the initial position when t = 0. The foot of the perpendicular drawn from the body onto any diameter executes SHM. Let P represent the foot of the perpendicular drawn from Q on the vertical diameter. When the body moves from Qo to Q, the foot of the perpendicular is displaced from O to P. Therefore, OP represents the displacement 'y' of the particle executing SHM.
 
From the figure,
 
 
q is the angle covered by the body moving on the circle with an angular velocity w in a time t.
 
 
Since A is a constant, the displacement is determined by wt or q. It is called the phase angle or phase. It determines the condition or state of vibration of a particle executing SHM. The graph of displacement versus phase angle is shown in the figure. It is a sine curve.
