| A spider web is stronger than steel of the same thickness. Its elastic limit is greater than that of steel. |

| A force is a push or pull exerted by one object or body on another. It may cause a body at rest to move or one in motion, to change its speed or direction. It may also change the shape or size of the body. Changing the shape or size of the body is of importance when the body is subjected to various forces. Studying the effect of the force, helps in selecting a material for a particular job, the material used for making sheets, wires etc. The first topic deals with behaviour of solids when forces act on them. The second, third and fourth topics deal with the behaviour of fluids under specific circumstances. |
