Electromagnetic Induction

Introduction
We have seen in the previous lesson that a current carrying conductor when kept in a magnetic field experiences forces and torques.

Is reverse phenomenon possible? If we rotate the coil in a magnetic field, will current flow in the coil without we passing it?

The answer is yes.

Current can be induced in the coil when the coils are rotated in a magnetic field. This has led to the alternate ways of generating current. Till electromagnetic induction was discovered only seats of e.m.f available were those of chemical nature such as dry cells. The present large-scale production, distribution is feasible because of this phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. Faraday and Henry independently discovered the principle of magnetically induced e.m.fs and found methods to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Electromagnetic induction formed the principle of two important electrical devices namely, electric generator and transformer, which has revolutionized the life styles of mankind.
