Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance
Numerical 09
09. Assume the radius of electron same to the radius of proton which is 10-15 m. Let the electron charge reside on the surface. What is the potential energy of such as charge distribution? Also, calculate the relativistic mass equivalent of this energy.
Suggested answer:
Potential energy of a charged spherical shell is given as
=11.52 x 10-14 Nm
= 1.152 x 10-13 J
= 0.72 MeV
Relativistic mass equivalent of energy
= 1 Jm-2 S2
= 1 Nm-2 s2
= 1 kg m s-2 mm-2 s2
= 1 kg
= 1.28 x 10-30 kg
