Microscope - Parts and Working
You need to get acquainted with the usage of the microscope, for observing cells. On the screen is the figure of a light microscope. Study the parts and learn their names.
The specimen to be observed is placed on a glass slide on the stage under an objective piece, in the middle of the microscope. Light is passed through the object with the help of a mirror and a condenser from below the stage. From the eye piece above you can see a magnified image of the object. You can get a sharp image by turning the side knobs.
Plant Cell
Peel off the thin epidermis (skin) in the inner layer of an onion. Neatly spread it in the centre of a glass slide on a drop of water.
Add a drop of iodine solution and gently place the cover slip. You will observe neatly packed epidermal cells when you see through the microscope.
Animal Cell
Scrape the inside of your cheek using an ice-cream spoon. Spread the tissue in a drop of water on a glass slide.
Add a drop of methylene blue and place a cover slip. Observe the cells (epithelial) under the microscope.
