Question : What do maximums and minimums mean in a derivative? What does it mean for a function to cross the x-axis in a derivative? What will it look like?

Answer : Maximums and minimums (otherwise known as extrema) are places where the derivative equals zero. Since the derivative of a function at a point is the slope of the curve at that point, we can deduce that at the extrema, both maximums and minimums, the slope is zero, which means it is either the top of a "bump" or the bottom of a "valley", where the curve changes directions and is momentarily, (instantaneously) "flat". What this means is: whenever there is a minimum, the curve changes directions from from decreasing to increasing. Wherever there is a maximum, the curve changes directions from increasing to decreasing. When a functions' graph crosses the x-axis, this means the value of the function at that point must be zero. You can find the places where a curve passes over the x-axis by setting the function equal to zero and solving for x...   More from Yahoo Answers
