I'm not sure what 'athlete and reader' is saying when she writes: >"Darwin's theory of evolution cannot accurately be accepted as a scientific but rather as a theory." If she is saying that Darwin's theory of evolution is not "scientific" because it is "only a theory" she would be very, very, very wrong. (I hope that's not what she's saying.) The dictionary definition she gave is correct, as far as how scientists use the word 'theory.' The key words are "statements or principles devised to explain" .... a theory is an *EXPLANATION* of facts ... an explanation widely accepted and repeatedly tested.
