Binary compound - A binary compound is a chemical compound that contains exactly two different elements. Examples are NaCl ( sodium chloride), NaF ( sodium fluoride), and MgO ( magnesium oxide). “Latin Method Latin name of metal + “-ic / “-ous (For lower valence) + Nonmetal + “-ide “Hydro- + Nonmetal + “-ic + “acid There are only 10 existing non-metals that can be involved in binary acids when combined with hydrogen: chlorine, fluorine, bromine, iodine, and sulfur. It can also equal an '-ide.' Nonmetal + Nonmetal + '-ide.' Add the appropriate Latin prefix to each element name to denote the number of atoms of each element present in a molecule of the compound. This method is generally not used with ionic compounds(see below), . For example, K 2 O is usually not called dipotassium monoxide; it is simply potassium oxide. P 4 O 6, however, would be tetraphosphorus hexoxide. Kelsey invented Some elements beginning with vowels (Oxygen, for example) replace the vowel en....

Chemists Discover Molecule Considered Too Unstable To Exist - ScienceDaily (Apr. 12, 2002) — EVANSTON, Ill. — Organic chemistry textbooks will need to be revised to recognize a chemical species that chemists have discovered at Northwestern University. The species — pentamethylcyclopentadienyl cation — was thought not to exist for long because theory said it was unstable. See also: Matter & Energy Chemistry Organic Chemistry Inorganic Chemistry Biochemistry Electronics Vehicles Reference Resonance (chemistry) Chemical compound Molecule Chemical bond 'I’ve said this molecule is unstable and doesn’t exist dozens of times in organic chemistry class, but, as it turns out, the molecule had different ideas,' said Joseph B. Lambert, Clare Hamilton Hall Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern. He and graduate student Lijun Lin discovered that the cation (a positively charged ion) is stable in the solid state for weeks at room temperature and in solution. The preparation of the cation and the solving of its X-ray structure are reported in the Ap....

Question : 1) What characterizes a substance as an element? Are atoms usually found in an isolated state or are they usually found combined with other elements?
2) Certain elements have special affinities for other elements. This causes them to bind together in special ways to form____.
3) Which of the following is not a physical property of aluminum?
a) It is a shiny metal
b) It can be hammered into thin sheets.
c) It melts at 660 degrees Celsius
d) It burns in air if heated strongly.
Answer : 1 & 2) The number of protons an atom has determines which element it is. Atoms are not generally found free in nature except for a rare few, and the nobel gases, the tend to form COMPOUNDS with other atoms to form molecules that are stable and can exist in nature in forms that are often found and use for by us 'intelligent' lifeforms, or a nutrients to the earth itself. 3) Al a) it IS a shiny metal b) it CAN be hammed into thin sheets c) in melts at 660.32 C d) It DOES NOT burn if heated, it melts instead - it is this property that has made aluminum the metal of choice in aeorodynamics for almost a century and its alloys are even more oxidation resistant.

Question : This is a chemistry question that I just can't seem to figure for my class. I have referred to my book numerous times, but it just doesn't provide a clear answer. Also, how do such differences account for their properties? This 2nd question is just one out of curiosity.
I thank anyone who is able to provide some insight for me:)
Answer : Ionic compounds are composed of charged ions that are held together by electrostatic forces. A typical type of ionic compound, called a binary compound because it is made up of two elements, will be composed of metallic positive ions (cations) and nonmetal negative ions (anions). Another type of ionic compound, called a ternary compound as it contain three elements, is composed of monatomic ions and polyatomic ions. When dealing with ionic formulas it is very important to remember that the formula does not show how the compound actually exists in nature. It only shows the ratio by which the individual ions combine. For example, the ionic formula for calcium chloride is CaCl2. Since calcium chloride is an ionic compound, this formula does not mean that there are actually two chlorine atoms floating around attached to one calcium atom. Ionic compounds are actually continuous, lacking the discrete units that make up a sample of a molecular substance. Rather, the formula shows th..
