The chromosome number in metaphase depends because a reproductive cell undergoes meiosis, which has 2 divisions. during metaphase of the first division, called "metaphase 1" the cell would have 46 double-stranded chromosomes because the 23 homologous pairs have lined up, ready to be seperated. in the metaphase 2 during the 2nd round of meiosis, each of those 2 cells, ow containing the haploid number (23 chromosomes) divide again, yielding 2 more sperm/egg cells containing 23 chromosomes. hope that elps :)..
