Percentage - In mathematics, a percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100 ( per cent meaning 'per hundred'). It is often denoted using the percent sign, '%'. For example, 45% (read as 'forty-five percent') is equal to 45 / 100, or 0.45. Percentages are used to express how large/small..

Question : Percents are used in many situations in life. Many articles and publications use percentages as a way of conveying information. It is important to know how to work with percents in order to make the information more meaningful. Can you please provide me with some examples.
Answer : Percent = Per 100 = n/100. I don't know what level of math you are, but here's my explanation; pardon me if it is too simplistic (or convoluted) When you talk about a percent of something, you are dividing that something into 100 units, then take a certain number of those units (per 100 units). It doesn't mater what the unit of measure is (gallons, meters, numeric quantity, etc). Complex explanation: Let's talk about 1 gallon of milk. It is 128 ounces. Let's say we want 1/2 of that gallon. If we take that gallon and divide it into 100 equal units, each unit will equal 1.28 ounces (128/100). Now we are not talking about ounces any more, but units of milk. We want 50 of the 100 units of milk (50%), then: 50/100 * 1.28 = 64 ounces. 50 units divided by 100 units and multiply by the value of each unit (1.28 ounces). Simplified: 50/100 * 128 = 64 or 1/2 * 128 = 64. Same answer as above.

Question : I'm horrible with math and I apologize for being stupid.
If I'm going to spend $63, but I have a card that gives me a 10% discount then how much would my total be?
Answer : Percent means 'out of 100,' so you can make a percent into a decimal value by dividing by 100. 10% = 10 / 100 = 0.10 (in effect, just move the decimal point two places left). In a word-problem, 'of' means multiply, so 10% of $63 would mean: 0.10 x $63 = $6.30 is the amount of the discount. Total price is the orignal $63 less the discount: $63.00 - $6.30 = $56.70
