independent variable : The terms " dependent variable" and " independent variable" are used in similar but subtly different ways in mathematics and statistics as part of the standard terminology in those subjects. They are used to distinguish between two types of quantities being considered, separating them into those available at the start of a process and those being created by it, where the latter (dependent variables) are dependent on the former (independent variables). The independent variable is typically the variable being manipulated or changed and the dependent variable is the observed result of the independent variable being manipulated. For example concerning nutrition, the independent variable of your daily vitamin C intake (how much should I take) can determine the dependent variable of your life span (what is the result or observation as a result of manipulating the 'independent variable'). Scientists will manipulate the vitamin C intake in a group of lets say 100 people who are over the..   More from Wikipedia
independent variable : An intervening variable is a hypothetical internal state that is used to explain relationships between observed variables, such as independent and dependent variables, in empirical research. The term “ intervening variable ” was first used by behavioral psychologist Edward C. Tolman in 1938...   More from Wikipedia

The means of each group of a two-way analysis of variance for two independent variables are plotted and shown in the three graphs. Which of these represents a disordinal interaction? Consider the interaction to be significant. => Both graph 1 and graph 2 or Graph 1 or Graph 3 or..
Access full lesson containing this video at: www.yourteacher.com Students learn that in a dependency relationship, one variable depends on the other variable. For example, the amount of snow on the ground depends on the amount of snow that has fallen. The independent variable is the amount of snow that has fallen, and the dependent variable is the amount of snow on the ground. Students learn that in a correlational relationship, however, there is a connection between the variables, but one ...

Question : Okay, So I wanted to test the hypothesis that fertilizer improves the growth rate of grass seeds. To test this hypothesis, I put the same amount of grass seed in 3 containers with the same type of soil. Then, I measured the growth at the end of the week. All plants received equal amounts of water and sunlight. Im sorta confused though..What was the independent variable in this? Is it the fertilizer?
Answer : The fertilizer is the independent variable (also called the manipulated variable) in this situation. Water, soil, pot size were held constant so were not variables in this situation but could also be considered independent variables if you changed/manipulated them for each trial. The height of the grass is the dependent variable (also called the responding variable)...   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : My 10th grade science project is, Which water tastes the best? I used bottled water, tap water, and well water and asked 50 people to drink them and tell me which they liked the best. What is the independent variable, dependent variable, and the control of my experiment. Please help!
Answer : Well we just did stuff like this too, I would think that your independent variable would be the water: since that is what you are changing. I would think that your dependent variable would be the which one they thought was better. *Just a thought but maybe you could ask then on a scale of 1-10 how much they liked the water. It would be easier to graph and stuff. I would think that your control would be what the people you asked would rate the air in their mouth. Not really sure though...   More from Yahoo Answers
