irrational numbers : In mathematics, an irrational number is any real number that is not a rational number —that is, it is a number which cannot be expressed as a fraction m/ n, where m and n are integers, with n non-zero. Informally, this means numbers that cannot be represented as simple fractions. Equivalently,..   More from Wikipedia

irrational numbers : In mathematics, a quadratic irrational, also known as a quadratic irrationality or quadratic surd, is an irrational number that is the solution to some quadratic equation with rational coefficients. Since fractions can be cleared from a quadratic equation by multiplying both sides by their..   More from Wikipedia

Question : are all irrational numbers not itegers, whole numbers or natural numbers? are can some of them be irrational and one of the other 3 types of numbers. and what is a real number

Answer : Intuitively, when you write numbers with a decimal point those numbers which have a "never ending and *non-repeating*" list of digits to the *right* of the decimal point are called "irrational numbers." Now of course, there are other far more precise and less intuitive definitions, but this one works. So, for example, the integer 1 is not irrational because written with a decimal point 1 is 1.0000... (we usually suppress the trailing zeros). So, because the 0's repeat it is not irrational. Whole numbers and natural numbers likewise all have that repeating zero syndrome. So, just to be concrete, what might an irrational number look like? Well, consider this number: 1.202002000200002000002000000200000002000000002.... This number has a very nice and I hope obvious pattern. I hope it is easy to see that 1) it never ends and 2) it never repeats. Of course, you say, the 0's *do* repeat, and yes they do, but there is no repeating pattern *group.* See how different this number is: 1.20002....   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : it was a question on my math homework: the real number line consists of rational and irrational numbers. explain the difference between these two types of numbers. Find four numbers between 5 and 7 (two must be rational and two irrational) use word and/or numbers to explain why the are rational or irrational.

Answer : A number is rational if and only if it can written as a ratio of integers, otherwise it is irrational. Here are two rational numbers between 5 and 7: 6 and 6.5. (6 can be written as 6/1 and 6.5 as 13/2.) That's easy. I'll give you one irrational. You'll need to think of one more. square root of 47 = 6.855654.....   More from Yahoo Answers
