Answer : Priestly began by placing a mouse in an air-tight container with a lit candle. Obviously, the mouse died. We now know that it was because of a lack of oxygen/excess of carbon dioxide. The flame required oxygen to burn, and the mouse was deprived. The he saw that placing a plant in the container with the mouse and candle "purified" the air, enabling the mouse to survive. He couldn't always replicate his result, especially inside. We know that the reason that the plant purified to air is because it photosynthesized, removing carbon dioxide from the air, while releasing oxygen. Obviously, when Priestly moved his experiment inside, the plant was denied access to sunlight and could not photosynthesize...   More from Yahoo Answers
