long vowel : In linguistics, vowel length is the perceived duration of a vowel sound. Often the chroneme, or the "longness", acts like a consonant, and may etymologically be one such as in Australian English. While not distinctive in most dialects of English, vowel length is an important phonemic factor in many other languages, for instance in Arabic, Czech, Estonian, Hindi, Sanskrit, Fijian, Finnish, Japanese, Hawaiian, Hungarian, Classical Latin, Classical Nahuatl, Lombard, German, Dutch, Latvian, Old English, Samoan, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese. It plays a phonetic role in the majority of English dialects, and is said to be phonemic in a few dialects, such as Australian English and New Zealand English. It also plays a lesser phonetic role in Cantonese, which is exceptional among the spoken variants of Chinese. Question : I am currently starting to study Japanese and i just learned that you add or to extend the vowel sounds but i want to know what if they were intending to write the character normally as itself since Japanese doesn't have spaces? ex) as doo... instead of dou... or is it the always assumed to be used to drag out the vowel sound?

Answer : i am japanese. i think consonant+vowel ( like + always sounds long. thats how we misspell in hiragana. younger sister in japanese is imouto but it is pronounced imooto. maybe people in old times had different spellings or sounds, languages can change and thats why spellings and sounds do not always correspond...   More from Yahoo Answers
