millikan oil drop experiment : Robert A. Millikan (March 22, 1868 – December 19, 1953) was an American experimental physicist, and Nobel laureate in physics for his measurement of the charge on the electron and for his work on the photoelectric effect. He served as president of Caltech from 1921 to 1945. Millikan went..   More from Wikipedia

millikan oil drop experiment : The elementary charge, usually denoted e, is the electric charge carried by a single proton, or equivalently, the negative of the electric charge carried by a single electron. This is a fundamental physical constant. To avoid confusion over its sign, e is sometimes called the "elementary positive..   More from Wikipedia

Question : I need to write a paper on a famous experiment in Physics, and i chose Millikan's oil-drop experiment. However, i have to explain what impact is had on the phyics world...and i'm clueless. I know it deteremed the mass of an electron, but how did that change they physics world?

Answer : many physicists had tried to find the mass of the electron using lots of sophisticated methods. Milliken's experiment was fairly simple . although difficult to carry out. Once the mass of the electron was found it was possible to calculate lots of other masses and charges which had been unknown before. It could be argued that the result led to nuclear experiments and theories, hence the nuclear age...   More from Yahoo Answers
