number of neutrons : Sep 19, 2009 ... Neutron number is rarely written explicitly in nuclide symbol notation, but appears as a subscript to the right of the element symbol. .....   More from Wikipedia

Discovery of Neutrons
The whole mass of an atom is due to the nucleus, which means that the nucleus must contain protons equal to the mass of the atom. As the number of protons is equal to the atomic number, the atomic mass should be equal to the atomic number. But for all atoms except hyd..
Nuclear Stability and Neutron/Proton Ratio
It has been found that the stability of nucleus depends upon its neutron to proton (n/p) ratio. A plot of N (the neutron number) against Z (atomic number or number of protons) show that for stable nuclides upto Z = 20, N = 20 i.e., the relat..

isotopes and atomic mass in this lesson covering atomic structure. Most elements exist in nature as more than one isotope. Isotopes are atoms that have the same number of protons as the element but a different number of neutrons. The number of protons always remains the same, as this number (also known as the atomic number) is what determines the element. Prof. Harman also introduces atomic mass units, or amu's, which are a more convenient unit for describing the very small masses of atoms ...

Question : ok I will show you 1 question so i can understand it and do thhe rest myself I am doing a table which looks like this Atom------Number of------Number of----Number of 33 ---------protons---------neutrons -----electrons -----S ------16------------------??----------16 16 How Do I find The number of neutrons? All the answers were wrong because it was 33 - 16 = 17 but thanks

Answer : Well assuming you have a periodic table, you need to look at that and see that the atom Sulphur, S, has relative atomic mass of 32. It has a proton number (or atomic number) of 16 (already in your table) so you subtract the number of protons from the relative atomic mass number (the number of protons and the number of neutrons added together), so 32 - 16 = 16. Therefore you have 16 neutrons. Hope this helped - sorry if it sounded patronising, but I was just trying to make it clear!!! We have the same name lol. Oh, and ignore the first answerer, protons, electrons and neutrons are NOT always the same - they just happen to be in this case...   More from Yahoo Answers

Question : I'm doing an assignment, and I need to know how do I find out the number of neutrons in element when only the mass number is given. The element is C-13, which is not on the periodic table so I can't look to find out what the atomic number is. If I knew the atomic number, then I wouldn't ask. The teacher didn't explain it nor did he show us an example that wasn't on the periodic table. I need help.

Answer : remember mass weight is both the number of protons and neutrons. so you know the number of protons from the atomic number All isotopes have the same number of protons no matter what number follows it. so carbon 13 would be 6 protons and 7 neutrons carbon 12 is 6 protons and 6 neutrons...   More from Yahoo Answers
