Question : i just stared taking my tabe tests so i can practice for my ged, well i scored a college level or above in grammer and reading but i got a 10th grade level in spelling, the lady there said it was nothing to worry about but i want to improve in it anyways, and if it were just a few words, that i guess i didnt know, i would practice it like a spelling test but its not. idk what words i have trouble with, because i see myself as a good speller, so what i want to know is if you have any tips or advi..
Answer : Personally I've never found that reading a lot helps as much as one might expect. Writing helps much more as long as your errors are identified. Try writing using a tool that identifies spelling errors on the fly (such as Microsoft Word) and make sure your email program has spell checking turned on. This makes it easy to create your own list of misspelled words. Every time a spelling error is identified in something you are writing you add the correct spelling to your list. After a few weeks of this you will have a decent size list of words you have trouble with. Use this list to drill yourself on. Knowing which words give you trouble helps you to identify patterns and gives you something to practice with. One thing you can do with your list of trouble words is get a spelling program like SpellQuizzer that will drill you on your trouble words.
